Example Projects in McDowell County Blue Ridge Parkway And The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail On their way to the Battle of Kings Mountain, a turning point in the American Revolution, mountain militiamen crossed the North Carolina mountains on an Indian trade route, now known as the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Near the border between Mitchell and McDowell counties, the Blue Ridge Parkway now follows the old path of the Victory Trail. Thanks to a $936,000 grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund and a $1,133,950 grant from the Natural Heritage Trust Fund matched by $1,100,000 from private donors, the Conservation Trust for North Carolina is working to protect forever an extraordinary 1,680-acre tract of land that includes 1.6 miles of the Victory Trail, nearly seven miles of dramatic forested mountain vistas, and seven miles of pristine trout streams. Permanent protection of this land will help preserve the beauty and the economic engine of the Blue Ridge Parkway, link key portions of the Victory Trail, and preserve water and air quality in North Carolina’s mountains. |
