Local Examples Paint the Picture

Narratives about places that matter are valuable as we talk to leaders and decision makers about Land for Tomorrow's proposal.

Do you know a story of how NC's conservation trust funds are making a real difference in your county? If so, we want to know more about it.

We would like to integrate your experience into a new section of Land for Tomorrow's website that allows you to click on your county to see where and how much money the conservation trust funds have invested.

You can tell us about how the land that matters to you was protected. You could describe your personal experience with these places. Or you can tell the tale of land that should have been protected but was not due to lack of funding.

Your examples (best when they include photographs) will strengthen the case that we make to the Legislature and the general public about why it is so important that we make this investment now.

Email your story to Marge Anders Limbert, Land for Tomorrow's outreach coordinator.

We have integrated sample projects into some of the county pages -- take a look at the following pages for examples: Camden, Lenoir, Pender, Alamance, Mecklenburg, Caldwell and Macon. And there are others -- you can also see the complete list of sample projects to give you an idea of what we're looking for.

When North Carolina's Legislature adjourned this year, time officially ran out for proposed legislation that would have put a $1 billion statewide land and water conservation bond referendum on the ballot this fall. It is disappointing that the bill, authorizing land and water conservation bonds, did not pass during this legislative session; however, the need is still dire and we must move forward to protect our state’s land, water and historic places.

The Legislature did establish a Land and Water Conservation Study Commission charged with recommending alternative funding sources for the plan to the 2007 General Assembly. The study commission will examine all options to help us protect North Carolina’s natural and historic beauty, and then make recommendations and report back no later than February 1, 2007.

We need to thank your Legislators for establishing this study commission, and ask them to act next year to provide $1 billion for land and water conservation. Take action today!
