Public Learns About Land and Water Conservation On New Advertisement
Land for Tomorrow today released a new television ad that will run statewide for two weeks starting Wednesday, May 9.  The purpose of the ad, titled “Protecting Our Land and Water Today,” is to educate the public about the urgent need to preserve more land and waterways in the face of uncontrolled growth and development.

The ad educates the public about our need to conserve more land to maintain “our way of life.” This includes protecting drinking water quality, forests, farms, rivers and streams.  Currently, over 3,300 miles of streams in the state do not meet water quality standards, and North Carolina tied for first in the number of farms lost in 2005.

The ad directs viewers to a new website, www.nclandandwater.org, for additional information about development threats and conservation needs in North Carolina. The ad is viewable on the website.

“North Carolinians understand the link between preserving natural resources and protecting our way of life,” said Kate Dixon, Director of Land for Tomorrow.  “Population growth and uncontrolled development are threatening our air and water, our wildlife, and the health of our communities.  This ad underscores the urgency of the task at hand – to protect more land and water before it’s too late.”

in the legislature continued
At the beginning of the month, Land for Tomorrow asked you to call your legislator in support of full funding for the Clean Water Management Trust Fund. The House was considering cutting the Clean Water Management Trust Fund in its version of the budget, but constituents from across the state let their representatives know just how important this conservation fund is. Land for Tomorrow and its various partners generated enough phone calls and emails, and the fund was restored to $100 million in the House Budget. Congrats!

Land for Tomorrow's Lobby Day on April 25 brought more than 125 individuals out to lobby in favor of land and water conservation. Citizens, legislative employees, and legislators themselves came out in the heat of noontime to enjoy ice cream from Maple View Farm, an Orange County dairy that has taken advantage of farm conservation easements made possible by our conservation trust funds. The evening was capped with a reception where dignitaries and legislators spoke with Land for Tomorrow partners and advocates about conservation. Thanks to all who made this event successful!
