Local Open Space Bond Passed on May 2, cont...

This local bond will pay for the expanded parks, green space, and cultural facilities throughout Wilmington, New Hanover County, and the beach towns.

"This is a tremendous success for New Hanover County," said Kate Dixon, Director of Land for Tomorrow. "We know that people all across the state view protection of our natural areas and parks as a priority. They see the connection between economic prosperity and land and water conservation. The fact that this issue passed truly underscores that the citizens of North Carolina know now is the time to protect our special places."

Public meetings over the past year revealed that the average park space per person in Wilmington lags behind the national average. Also, they showed a great need for facility improvement, and an immediate time frame due to ever-increasing land prices.

"Citizens in New Hanover County recognized the urgency in their home town, and it also exists all over our state. We must act now to protect our land, water, historic places, and our future. Land for Tomorrow's statewide Land and Water Conservation Bond will help accomplish this," Dixon said.
